Sherree Chamberlain – The Wasp In the Room

Sherree Chamberlain - The Wasp In the Room

I first came across this indie/folk quartet at a rally to help support the Invisible Children campaign a few years ago. They were just an underground band that no one knew except their few faithful followers, but after my one chance encounter with the sweet sounds of Sherree I was hooked. In a packed parking lot scattered with tents and sleeping bags I watched this 5 foot blonde belt out complex lyrics to a catchy melody and knew she had talent. I spent a lot of my time listening to the only four songs they had on their Myspace until they finally released a full length album this summer. I know the folk genre doesn’t appeal to many people, but what I think most people will get out of the songs is the heaviness of her voice that is different than folk artists like Patty Griffin or Rosie Thomas. When I’m in a deep melancholy mood I plug in my earphones and loose myself in the poetic lyrics. Sometimes I can feel the brokenness behind her voice and relate to each emotion. I think that is what makes a good songwriter. You have to feel the music to be able to treasure it and that’s how I experience music.

Thanks for reading my heavy blog I appreciate you taking the time. Until next time…
